Girls' Best Friend

I have recently realized something very disturbing about myself. When I was younger I couldn't stand dark chocolate, and semi-sweet was just a back-up plan in case there wasn't any milk chocolate available. But now, I think I prefer dark chocolate the most of all. Why? Because I can eat more of it without getting sick. . .

Milk chocolate is just too sweet.

s'il vous plaît

Wow, I've been very remiss about blogging (again), but this turned out to be a rather busy week.

Sunday I went to Brixx (for the first time) to watch the World Cup with Pete. It's sad that the Netherlands lost, since Pete and I both have Dutch last names -- Van Nostrand and Van Dalen -- and we were rooting for them.

Monday I had to go to campus to get my computer fixed. Thankfully it didn't have a virus (as I originally thought), but only a corrupt file that needed to be removed. Now it's fine. After that, I got coffee and hung out with Alyson for a while before going to work.

Tuesday and Thursday I babysat 4 kids for 8 hours. That would be tiring for any normal person, but for me it was especially exhausting. I can't stand kids. There were 3 boys (15, 12, 10) and one girl (8). I spent the whole first day chasing them around, taking Airsoft guns away and begging them to get off the roof (by way of a ladder, rather than jumping--supposedly into the pool). Thursday was much better though, and I think they want me to come back. I confess, they grew on me, and I hope I get to see them again (don't tell my Dad or Pastor Stu).

Friday I worked, read a lot, and cleaned the house.

Today I hung out with Alyson at her new apartment, and for the next two weeks I'll be dog-sitting for an FBI agent (whaaaaat).

Little Miss Clumsy

I have surpassed myself in clumsiness yet again.

Last night at work there were some repair men trying to fix the dishwasher. Great and good -- working appliances are always nice, yes? Well, I had to get something out of the pantry that was right across from where they were working, so I flung open the door. However, my foot was in the way, so the door bounced back off my foot and whacked me in the face.

The repair men turned around just at the wrong moment and saw it all. One of them asked me if it'd been like that all day for me, and I scowled at him and said, "NO" in my most surly voice. I think he approved.

A Glimpse of Starlight

I was at Weaver Street with Hannah today, and who should we see? Non other than Zooey Deschanel herself. Crazy, right? Apparently, that's where she records her records or something (that's what the Weaver Street employee said).

Hazards of the Job

I work in a shitty little Italian restaurant called Angelo's. It's a family-owned business, and I've been there for 4 years. The place was remodeled recently, and the new floors are pretty nice. They're made of large, sand-colored tiles which are a lot easier to sweep than the old floors. However, when they're wet, it's nearly impossible not to fall.

Tonight felt like it would never end, and I was more than ready to go home. Finally, my boss told me I could clock out, but I had to walk through the dining room in order to get to the exit. Just as I passed through the swinging door between the kitchen and the dining room, I started to slipped on the wet floor.

I caught myself but immediately slipped again. The second time felt like it happened in slow motion. I was just standing there in one spot, slipping over and over again while everyone (including one of my co-workers' boyfriend and another girl's husband) stood there and watched me with horror-stricken looks on their faces.

Eventually my ass made contact with the floor, and I was no longer skating on the linoleum. All the spectators unfroze in unison and started asking me if I was ok or needed help. The boyfriend of my co-worker helped me up, even though I said I was fine (which was nice of him). It was really embarrassing though.

I ran for the door as gracefully as I could, and I'm hoping no one will remember the incident when I have to work again on Friday.

Just a Little Catching Up

Oh yes! July is here!
Ok, I'm really not that excited about July, but it's a new month, and that is always a thing to celebrate, I think.

Last week I submitted my first non-school-related short story to an online contest. I didn't win. However, here's the link if you'd like to read it and tell me how great it is, and that I should've won. (just kidding)

I'm in the process of reading the book My Antonia by Willa Cather with my Aunt Donna. I came across this great quote in it:
"I was something that lay under the sun and felt it, like the pumpkins, and I did not want to be anything more. I was entirely happy. Perhaps we feel like that when we die and become a part of something entire, whether it is sun and air, or goodness and knowledge. At any rate, that is happiness; to be dissolved into something complete and great. When it comes to one, it comes as naturally as sleep."
Also, I brushed my teeth with baking soda tonight because I heard it's better for you than toothpaste. Well, it tastes BAD.
